Five members of the Georgia Canoeing Association and I, a Sierra Club member, floated down the pristine Flint River for two days, Saturday and Sunday.
Getting out in the middle of nature and appreciating it with other people who support the extensive river network in Georgia made me grateful for the rich nature habitat this state still possesses. Having a blue heron escort, eating fresh-caught bass at camp at night, playing in the Class 2 rapids in Rebel Chute, paddling like crazy in pelting rain -- it just doesn't get any better than that.
I am reminded each time I paddle the Flint that it was President Jimmy Carter who stopped Georgia Power from putting a dam on this great recreational resource. This happened after he was introduced to the river on a canoe trip. The Flint River is a wonderful river for beginning paddlers; there's just enough Class 2 to make the run adventuresome, but in high water there are parts that can exceed Class 3. That part (which yours truly avoids) is Yellow-Jacket Shoals, one of the few habitats for shoal lilies, which bloom in late May.
My recommendation for back ache, depression, anxiety...get thee to the river! It renews the spirit and rejuvenates the mind!
