I spent Saturday, August 6, mapping Chilson Creek for the Huron River Watershed Council. Volunteers from the group, based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, spend many days each year collecting water samples from various tributaries of the Huron River, searching for life in these water samples, or mapping the various creeks that feed the Huron River and eventually Lake Erie.
Today I joined a group of three other hearty souls to map a small portion of Chilson Creek near my home. We slogged through the creekbed in waders (or tennis shoes in my case) taking measurements of stream width, depth, and flow rate. We recorded information about plant life in and around the stream as well.
I live in one of the fastest-growing counties in Michigan and it is important to record how growth and development are affecting our streams and rivers .
