What better way to enjoy this 95+ degree Idaho day than to sit out on the deck with your composting worm bin? Even red wrigglers enjoy fresh air once in a while, although, like me, they soon had enough of the blazing sun and I brought them back indoors for a light misting and a bit of watermelon rind. My home, situated about 25 miles north of Boise, is a haven where I treasure the beauty of the surrounding pine- and fir-covered hills. It is where I retreat to renew my spirit, away from noise, traffic, cell phones, and the glut of products demanding to be bought. Here, for a little while, I can turn my focus from the overwhelming problems of the world to living my own life in the best way I know how.
Free from distractions, I regain my thoughts, my sense of place, and my identity. It is this solitude that I most value when I spend time in the wilderness, and which I seek in a smaller way at home. It is the experience of solitude that allows me to reconnect with the natural world so that I can return to work feeling whole again and able to share the joy of being alive.
