As the Curator of LeConte Memorial Lodge, the Sierra Club's home in Yosemite National Park, my life and work perpetuate caring and respect for Nature and Wilderness.

Today, August 6, I awoke in my canvas tent near the Merced River, where I live from mid-April until mid-October, without electricity or running water--but for the river. I, along with the LML volunteers will embark, as we have each day since May 1, on the Green Shoes Project. Green Shoes was established to encourage visitors to, in each step, walk as if wearing Green Shoes. Each step taken will be a reminder to care for the Natural World and be a Steward of Wilderness.

Our message is simple: we hope that each of our 17,000 visitors, who stop by to meet us each season, from May 1 through September 30, will develop a deeper abiding relationship with the Natural World. This we impart through environmental education in response to environmental illiteracy.

Always in Nature, B. J. Gisel, Curator, LeConte Memorial Lodge
